Skateboarding Tooth Injury in South OC: What to Do Now + Same-Day Repair

San Juan Capistrano, CA

In pain after a skate fall? Call now

Same-day help is often available. Call (949) 496-5585 or start here: Emergency Dental Care.

ER or dentist—how to decide

  • Go to the ER now if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, suspected jaw fracture, or head injury/LOC.

  • Call an emergency dentist for most tooth injuries: knocked-out, loose/pushed tooth, cracked/chipped tooth, lost filling/crown.

First aid you can do right now

If a permanent tooth was knocked out (avulsed)

  1. Pick it up by the crown (top), do not touch the root.

  2. If dirty, gently rinse with water (no scrubbing/soap).

  3. Reinsert into the socket and bite on clean gauze. If you can’t reinsert, keep it moist in milk or your cheek.

  4. Get seen immediately—time is critical.

    Helpful guide: AAE Knocked-Out Teeth

If the tooth is loose, shifted, or sore to bite (luxation)

  • Do not try to force it back yourself.

  • Apply a cold compress outside the cheek and avoid biting on that side.

  • Call us for repositioning and splinting.

If the tooth is chipped or cracked

  • Save any fragments (milk/saline).

  • Rinse; cold compress for swelling; avoid hard foods.

  • We’ll advise bonding, onlay, or crown depending on depth.

Cuts to lip/cheek/tongue

  • Apply direct pressure with clean gauze for 10–15 minutes.

  • If bleeding won’t stop or the cut is deep → ER/urgent care.

Tetanus check: Skate abrasions are “dirty” wounds; ask your clinician if you’re due for a tetanus booster.

What we can do for you today

  • Diagnose fast: exam + digital X-rays/3D scan; numb the area for relief.

  • Stabilize/repair:

  • Home care while you heal: soft foods, chew on the opposite side, cold compresses, OTC pain relief as directed.

Costs, insurance & timing (no surprises)

We’ll give you an insurance-aware estimate and timeline before treatment.

Back on the board (safely)

  • Most bonding/crown repairs let you return once tenderness subsides (often days).

  • After splinting or root canal, we’ll give a sport-specific timeline.

  • Consider a mouthguard (boil-and-bite or custom) to protect teeth and new restorations—especially if you ride bowls, transition, or downhill.

FAQs: Skateboarding Dental Injuries (South OC)

  • Immediately—ideally within 30 minutes. Reinsert or keep the tooth moist and come in right away.

  • Sometimes, with repositioning and splinting plus time; we’ll monitor the nerve and bite.

  • Small chips = bonding; larger fractures or cracks that weaken the tooth often need an onlay or crown for strength and esthetics.

  • Modern anesthesia makes it feel similar to a filling; the goal is to relieve pain, then protect the tooth with a crown as needed.

  • Often yes for minor repairs; after splinting, extractions, or surgery, we’ll give a case-specific return-to-skate plan.
